🌍 About & History

🏛️ Introduction

The Bharat Scouts and Guides is a voluntary, non-political, and secular organization registered under the Societies Registration Act. It is dedicated to the development of young people through character building, leadership, and service to society.

The Karnataka State Association headquarters is located in Bengaluru, serving as a key center for training and coordination of scouting and guiding activities.

🔰 Genesis of Scouting and Guiding in the World

The Scout Movement began in 1907, when Robert Baden-Powell, a British Army officer, organized an experimental camp on Brownsea Island with 21 boys from diverse backgrounds.

  • Camp held: 29 July – 9 August 1907
  • Book published: Scouting for Boys (1908)
  • This marked the beginning of the global Scout Movement

In 1909, the Crystal Palace Rally brought together over 11,000 scouts. During this event, girls expressed their desire to join the movement. This led to the formation of the Girl Guide Movement in 1910, with the support of Agnes Baden-Powell.

🇮🇳 Scouting in India

Scouting was introduced in India in 1909 by Captain T.H. Baker, who started the first Scout troop in Bengaluru. Soon, the movement spread to cities like Kolkata, Pune, Shimla, Chennai, Jabalpur, and Mumbai.

Initially, scouting activities were limited to European and Anglo-Indian children.

  • First Indian Girl Guides Company: 1916 (Pune)

🇮🇳 Nationalist Movement in Scouting

Since Indian boys were initially excluded, Indian leaders established independent scouting organizations:

  • Madan Mohan Malviya
  • Hriday Nath Kunzru
  • Sriram Bajpai

They formed the Sewa Samiti Scout Association in Allahabad.

Additionally, Annie Besant started a separate Scout Association in Madras.

📌 Key Milestones

  • Wood Badge Course: 1922 (Calcutta)
  • Scoutmasters Training: 1923 (Pachmarhi)

Efforts to unify scouting organizations initially failed due to differences in the Scout Promise, particularly regarding allegiance to the British Crown.

🇮🇳 Scouting & Guiding in Independent India

After independence, national leaders worked towards unification:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru
  • Abul Kalam Azad
  • Mangal Das Pakvasa

The unified organization, The Bharat Scouts and Guides, was officially formed on 7 November 1950.
The Girl Guides Association joined on 15 August 1951.

Tara Chand played a key role in finalizing the merger.
